KISHUTHARA

Guests traveling to Bhutan are often wowed by the colourful national dress (Kira) worn by Bhutanese ladies.

This particular type of Kira, known as a Kishuthara, is an extremely intricate patterned silk textile weaved in the remote Khoma village of Lhuentse. The women of Khoma work in makeshift textile cottages, weaving these unique silk patterns which are renowned in Bhutan as one of the most colorful and intricately woven fabrics in the country.

All kishuthara pieces are individually hand woven and a single piece of kishuthara takes about 8 - 12 months to weave by a single weaver.

MAD supports the community by commissioning the weavers to produce these prized kishutharas. All proceeds will be channeled to improve the livelihood of the rural school children in Lhuentse.
